Let’s be honest, when talking about classic American cuisine, the word healthydoesn’t necessarily come to mind. Typical American food is essentially comfort food heavy in the carb department, and even though it is absolutely irresistible, it goes against pretty much all the principles of what is considered healthy in today’s mind. So how do we go about this? Do we simply give up on all these delicious dishes in order to maintain a balanced, nutrient-dense diet? Absolutely not!

Here at Amandean, we love our healthy rituals but also feel it's important to indulge from time to time, especially alongside the ones you love. From cheat days to birthdays, and even lazy Sundays, there’s a time for carrot cake, flapjacks, and a greasy spoon. Life is a balance after all and what are taste-buds for otherwise?! Today we dive into a series of mouth-watering American recipes you can easily prepare in the comfort of your own home with a healthy twist. Don’t believe the healthy version can be as delicious as the original? We dare you to try them. Keep reading.

    Why Add Collagen?

Our unflavored collagen powder has no taste or smell and won’t interfere with the texture of your favorite recipes either. Collagen can be a secret ingredient in most recipes without you even knowing it’s there. But why do we insist on enriching your homemade treats with a collagen supplement? We know that for some of you, being consistent with your daily supplements isn’t always easy. It’s not uncommon to forget, or just grow tired of swallowing pills. By being able to mix your highly soluble protein powder into your meals and beverages, you’re getting the convenience you need in your busy schedule.

Collagen is a fibrous protein that we are able to manufacture naturally, unfortunately that production comes with certain limitations. Our collagen reserves are depleted by environmental toxins, pollution, poor lifestyle choices, as well as stress. To make matters worse, the collagen production process slows down after the age of 25, and it is up to us to replenish it ourselves. While eating collagen-rich foods like bone broth is advised, whole foods alone don’t usually suffice. A high-bioavailability collagen supplement, significantly digested, absorbed and metabolized, remains the most convenient source of pure collagen protein.

Collagen is a superfood for overall health and graceful aging. Collagen accounts for a significant portion of our skin (an outstanding 75% of skin’s dry weight to be exact), as well as our bones, tendons and lean muscle. It determines their strength, flexibility, and endurance. The term ‘collagen deficiency’ often pops up when talking about disorders or chronic conditions in these areas of the body.

Collagen has also been shown to promote healthy weight loss, as the extra protein helps to create a feeling of fullness. As you already know, protein-packed meals tend to have a satiating effect that will leave you full for hours. Furthermore, by supporting the gastrointestinal wall, collagen has been found to promote gut health and healthy digestion. A collagen supplement is also recommended for people suffering from insomnia and similar sleep-related conditions, as its main amino acid glycine intensifies sleep duration and quality.

Now let’s get down to business and prepare some mouthwatering collagen-infused classic American recipes!

    Collagen-Infused Yeast-Free Wraps

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup warm water (add 1-2 tbsp more as needed)
    • 3 tbsp olive oil
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 2 cups flour (we recommend a mixture of bread flour and wholemeal flour)
    • 1 scoop Grass-Fed Collagen Powder

    Preparation

Cook time:4 minutes per wrap; 6 to 8 wraps

    1. Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl and stir well. Slowly add the water and the oil, making a cohesive mixture with your hands. The dough should be soft and smooth. Pour some oil onto your worktop and knead the dough for another 5 minutes. Return the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rest for 1-2 hours (making sure it doesn’t rise too much!).

    2. Place the dough on a floured surface, knock it down to remove the air, and then create the shape of a sausage in order to divide it into 6 to 8 equal balls. Use a rolling pin to roll each of the balls into a thin (but not too thin) circle (wrap). Cook each wrap in a lightly oiled medium-size frying pan for about 2 minutes on each side. Make sure your wrap doesn’t burn, and remove it from the pan as soon as it gets that nice lightly golden color. Add some oil into your frying pan in between every other wrap.

And if you need some ideas when it comes to filling, we recommend guacamole, chili peppers, and grilled chicken. The possibilities are endless!

    Collagen Gluten-Free Banana Bread

    Ingredients

    • 6 tbsp water
    • ½ cup plant based milk of your choice
    • 2 tbsp milled flaxseed
    • 3 medium bananas (very ripe is best!)
    • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
    • ½ cup ground almonds
    • ½ cup gluten-free plain flour
    • ¼ cup buckwheat flour
    • 2 tsp baking powder
    • ⅓ - ½ cup golden caster sugar (or alternative of your choice)
    • ½ tsp baking soda
    • ¼ cup maple syrup
    • ¼ cup olive oil
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 scoop Gluten-Free Collagen Peptides Powder

    Preparation

Total preparation time: 1h 5 min (prep time 15 min, cook time 50 min); Serving size: 8 to 12 slices

    1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Prepare a loaf pan by lining it with baking (parchment) paper. Mix the milled flaxseed with water, stir well and set it aside. In a separate bowl, mix the almond milk and apple cider vinegar and set aside. Prepare the bananas by mashing or blending them. In a large bowl add the flours, collagen protein, ground almonds, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda, then stir together.

    2. Now add the remaining ingredients (olive oil, maple syrup, mashed banana, the apple cider vinegar mix, vanilla extract, and flaxseed) and stir until the mixture is well blended. Pour the mixture into the loaf pan on top of the baking paper and cook for 50 minutes until golden. You’ll know your banana bread is ready when you insert a skewer and it comes out clean. Allow it to cool before serving.

    Crustless Sausage and Pepper Quiche

    Ingredients

    • ½ pound turkey sausage (cooked, chopped/crumbled)
    • ½ cup chopped onion
    • 1 cup shredded low-fat cheddar
    • 2 tbsp whole wheat flour
    • 2 large eggs
    • ¼ cup diced green and red bell peppers
    • 2 egg whites
    • 1 cup skim milk
    • ¾ tsp salt
    • ⅛ tsp red pepper sauce
    • 1 scoop Fat-Free Collagen Powder

    Preparation

Preparation time: 1 hour; Servings: 6

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Combine the sausage with wheat flour, collagen protein, cheese, onion, and peppers. Prepare a 9-inch pie pan by spraying it with some vegetable oil and add the sausage mixture. Stir eggs, egg whites, salt, milk, and red pepper sauce together and then pour it over the previously added sausage mixture. Bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick in the center comes out clean. Allow your quiche to cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting it.
