My interest in collagen powder came about after a personal experience with my sister. Formerly, she had been using collagen supplements daily to help keep her bones strong. In other words, she was using collagen strictly for health purposes. However, in my search for an effective anti-aging skin supplement, I kept on stumbling across mentions of collagen and decided to dig deeper. In my search, I learned that there are not only different sources of collagen (bovine, porcine, and marine) but also that there are 28 types of collagen, although not all are bioavailable in humans. However, the type of collagen that predominantly makes up the skin are types I and III. These two types are both found in collagen from marine sources, making marine collagen an ideal dietary supplement product for people like myself concerned with keeping their skin youthful.

When it comes to collagen supplements, I've done some thorough research and also trialed multiple brands myself. After all, seeing is believing when it comes to youthful skin. The bad news is: There are literally dozens and dozens of brands to choose from and its not always easy to know where to start. The good news is, Im about to let you in on my number one pick so you can skip the agony of trying twenty or more. Quite simply, I use Amandean's Wild-Caught Marine Collagen as my number 1 choice. Amandean has an excellent reputation for sourcing clean, non-GMO ingredients while also offering superior solubility and bioavailability as compared to their competitors. Believe me, no one wants a fishy smelling, clumpy Marine Collagen no matter how good it is for your skin. Marine collagen is scientifically-proven to be the most effective collagen for anti-aging skin purposes and my article will go deeper to reveal exactly why this source of collagen and the Amandean brand are such a good pick.

    All-Natural Marine Collagen

But wait! Why is collagen so important?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It is the building material to renew cells in all areas of the body including: hair, skin, nails, eyes, teeth, cartilage, bones, tendons, internal organs, arteries, blood vessels, and the immune system. Collagen accounts for 80% of all connective tissue and 75% of the skin.

Our body is able to produce collagen naturally but as we age, starting from the age of 30, collagen production gradually declines (up to 1.5% per year), until in our fifties and sixties collagen is depleted to a large extent along with a decline in metabolic activities. These changes in our dermal elastin result in decreased skin elasticity, loss of skin tone and a progressive deepening of facial creases and wrinkling, which makes the typical symptoms of aging much more visible.

Aging alone is far from the only enemy of skin. Rigorous exercise, exposure to the sun's harmful rays, psychological issues and stress, as well as hormonal and environmental changes can affect the skin's appearance and integrity in a negative way. (1)

Fortunately, clinical studies support the use of collagen to modulate skin functions and can, therefore, be a significant factor in keeping the skin healthy and youthful looking for much longer. Not only that but collagen does this in a natural, non-invasive way as compared to many topical skin treatments that are both uncomfortable and expensive.

    Collagen Distribution in the Body

So, What kind of collagen will be best for my skin?

Supported with trusted clinical studies I strongly suggest that Marine Collagen is your best option for anti-aging skin effects.

Let's start with an interesting study that examines skin results using a marine collagen supplement. Marine Collagen delivered in the form of dietary collagen peptides acts to inhibit transcriptional and posttranscriptional enzymes responsible for breaking down collagen in an extracellular matrix which is called "matrix metalloproteinase-1". Furthermore, through inhibiting upregulation of the enzyme "elastase" which involves the degradation process of elastic fiber, marine collagen prevents aging of the skin right where it starts. More simply, marine collagen not only acts to prevent skin aging through replacing depleted collagen but further protects existing collagen in the skin from breaking down. (2)

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that supplementation with a bioactive collagen peptide affects eye wrinkle formation and stimulate biosynthesis of procollagen I, elastin and fibrillin "constituents of dermal matrix" in the skin. The study was tested on 114 women aged 45–65 years to obtain results. The participants experienced a significant reduction of eye wrinkles. In addition, a higher content of procollagen type I and elastin were detected demonstrating that collagen's positive effect on the skin seems to be caused by a direct impact on dermal extracellular matrix turnover, as shown by a significant increase in collagen and elastin synthesis. (3)

Adding to its proven results on aging skin, marine collagen can also reduce the appearance of wounds or scars. Studies show that marine collagen was found to regenerate an extracellular matrix, promote cell proliferation, as well as protein synthesis. For this reason, marine collagen can be used to minimize deformities in the skin as the result of scars, burns, and rashes, keeping the skin healthy and undamaged. (4)

    What exactly is Marine Collagen?

    Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen

Collagen is most commonly obtained from bovine and porcine sources and usually from the skins of these animals. However, the outbreak of certain animal diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, dietary choices to stay away from beef products, as well as religious issues which prevent many people from using collagen from these sources have limited their use. A more suitable alternative people with these concerns is, of course, collagen from a marine source.  Marine Collagen is found to have excellent bioactive properties, including biocompatibility meaning that it doesn't cause immunological rejection.(4)

Marine collagen has an excellent absorption rate in humans due to its smaller particle size as compared to other animal collagens. It is absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the human body and has superior bioavailability over bovine or porcine collagens, which means your body is able to utlize it more efficiently to obtain enhanced results.

Why should you choose Amandean's brand of Marine Collagen?

Amandean's premium wild-caught marine collagen is unflavored which differs from other products that suffer from residual bad taste due to the marine origin of the product. In otherwords, no one likes a fishy aftertaste in their smoothie! The Amandean brand is also one of the most soluble on the market allowing users to easily incorporate it into their daily diets by adding a scoop to their coffee, tea, water, juice, smoothies, sauces, and even baked goods. Amandean's wild-caught marine collagen won't affect the color or consistency of your food or drink, so you can basically incorporate it into your daily routine without knowing its actually there.

Amandean’s wild-caught marine collagen is made from the skins of wild-caught cod from the pristine waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. This means that the product is free of farm-caught fish often used in competitor brands. Additionally, Amandean’s marine collagen is made at a plant in Canada that only manufactures fish collagen and gelatin, so there’s no contact or cross contamination with beef or porcine products. Amandean’s product is also non-GMO, gluten-free, fat free, and is lab tested at the highest safety standards at an FDA cGMP certified facility.

    Summary

If you’re looking for a safe, effective, and simple way to enhance your health while also reversing the effects of aging on your skin, Marine Collagen is where its at. Scientifically-backed studies have shown how this highly bioavailable collagen helps to restore elasticity, improve the skin's texture, as well as aid in the healing process.
